The StarPlan section of the Globe Institute at The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen is looking for a FU AC-TAP as Research Software Engineer with effect from 15 August 2026. The position is for 4 and half months.

About us

StarPlan is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to understanding the formation and evolution of planetary systems, combining cosmochemistry, planetary science, astronomy, astrophysics and geochemistry. The successful candidate will collaborate with an international team of researchers, including Michiel Lambrechts and Anders Johansen on understanding the origins of planetary formation through a theoretical and computational approach.

Tasks

Genga is a state-of-the-art GPU-based symplectic N-Body integrator widely used to calculate the dynamical evolution of planetary systems and their formation. This position is for the technical development of this program, requiring extensive programming experience in the CUDA language for GPU architectures, with the objective of achieving optimal performance in HPC cluster environments, such as the Tycho cluster at the University of Copenhagen and the Gefion GPU supercomputer. The candidate will be asked to maintain, develop and document the planet formation module, such that it can be made available for use to group members and ultimately the scientific community by making open source and accessible.

Additionally, the candidate will be asked to provided assistance with code development in various ongoing scientific code development projects at the theoretical planet formation group in the Python/Fortran/C/C++ coding languages, especially in the context of high-performance supercomputing at national and international facilities.

We expect

  • Academic background
  • Experience with developing software for scientific purposes
  • Familiarity with GPU computing and the CUDA programming language
  • Experience with managing large-scale code development in scientific context
  • PhD in astrophysics
  • Written and spoken fluency in English

Terms of salary and employment

The employment and salary is made in accordance with the Circular on the Collective Agreement concerning academics in the state sector concluded between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Employment will be as academic research staff. The salary is based on seniority. Negotiation for salary supplement is possible. The working time are 37 hours per week on average. The working hours are flexible.

The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is in the process of implementing a new joint administrative organization and new workflows, which will bring changes in the coming years.
